Genealogy tools that work on your own files
Lineagesmith is a set of free browser tools for people who research a family tree. Pick the job: look inside a GEDCOM file, convert it between versions, export it to a spreadsheet, check it for problems, remove living people before sharing it, or print it as a chart, sheet or poster. The calculators answer the questions that come up along the way: what a relative is called, how far apart two cousins are, what the Hebrew or Julian date was, how old someone was at death.
Files you open stay in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and there is no sign-up.
Where to start
- A file from a family tree program or website: open it in the GEDCOM viewer, then run the GEDCOM validator to see what needs fixing.
- Sharing a tree: use remove living people from a GEDCOM first.
- Two relatives: the cousin calculator and the relationship calculator name the relationship; the cousin chart shows all of them at once.
- An old record with an odd date: the Julian to Gregorian converter, the Hebrew date converter and the age at death calculator help read it.
- On paper: the family tree poster, family group sheet and descendant chart.
